We're excited to see you in September! Here are some travel tips and tricks that will make your trip to wine country easier, more affordable and more enjoyable. Have a question or request? Email us, we're happy to help you make decisions or connect you with other guests who are traveling at the same time.
Planning to fly out to California? Here are our suggested airports, rental car and transportation providers and routes to wine country. We highly suggest booking travel as early as possible to avoid higher fares and oversold flights.
Travel time from SFO to wine country is around 1.5 hours, but can be affected by rush-hour traffic. We highly suggest avoiding a Friday rush-hour trip between the airport and the valley. Along the western route from SFO, you easily stop to enjoy San Francisco, Sausalito, the Golden Gate Bridge and a number of In-N-Out Burgers. The rental car facility for SFO is a short tram ride from baggage claim and is less than one mile from the 101 and 280.
Oakland International Airport is also located about 1.5 hours south of the Napa and Sonoma valleys. This airport has a separate Rental Car Center which is just a short bus ride from the baggage claim area. The drive to wine country is similar in length (a little longer to Sonoma than Napa) but is less scenic and doesn't offer as many exciting stops along the way.
Although ride-share options like Uber and Lyft are available to take you to wine country, we highly suggest getting a rental car for the duration of your trip. The fees associated with renting a car for the weekend are often less expensive than a round trip in an Uber, and you will have the freedom to set your own schedule once you have arrived. There will be plenty of available Ubers and group transportation options in Sonoma once you have arrived to the wedding festivities. Please do not drink and drive!
In our experience, Enterprise Rent-A-Car always has a great selection, friendly and helpful attendants, a quick rental process and short lines. There are other available options at each airport if you prefer a different vendor. Please be sure to ask about tolls and fees associated with crossing the Golden Gate and other bridges when you choose your rental plan. A rental car is a rental car, so we recommend you pick the cheapest vendor!
Should you have time, we suggest taking this opportunity to explore the Bay Area during your trip from the airport to the valley. Because wine country is so close to other attractions, you won't want to miss some of our favorites along the way: Crissy Field, Sausalito, Alcatraz Island, Muir Woods, the Palace of Fine Arts, In-N-Out Burger and more. We have plenty of restaurant recommendations too!
New to Uber? We have partnered with Uber for our wedding. Please feel free to use our custom wedding Uber code FOSTERVOWS for $20 off your first ride! We suggest downloading the app, applying the credit and adding a payment source before you land so that you aren't scrambling at the airport.
Both the Napa and Sonoma districts are full of great places to lay your head! Below are our recommendations for hotel and rental accommodations for our wedding weekend. September is peak harvest season for the areas, so we suggest booking early. Because the wedding venue is in Sonoma, we suggest choosing a hotel or home share option in either Sonoma, Glen Ellen, Kenwood or Santa Rosa. Booking in Napa is also fine, but please expect a 45-60 minute drive at minimum during harvest season to our venue.
Foster and Kelsey will be staying at the Lodge at Sonoma (see below). September is the valley's busiest month, therefore room blocks aren't available at local hotels.
There are plenty of other area 'big-box' hotels and historic, boutique hotels in the Sonoma region including the Best Western Sonoma Valley Inn, MacArthur Place, and the Ledson Hotel. Not sure which one to pick? We're happy to make recommendations.
Another great way to experience Napa and Sonoma is to book a private home through Airbnb or VRBO. This option is great for groups and families! The wedding venue is in Sonoma/Kenwood, therefore we suggest looking for rentals in the Sonoma, Eldridge, Glen Ellen, Kenwood areas. We love staying in home rentals-- they offer more space, full kitchens, discounted group pricing and a long list of amenities. Many homes in the area have pools! When looking at homes, feel free to contact the host for more specific details about each home.
When looking for homes in the area, please use the below map as a reference. The distance between downtown Sonoma and the venue at Chateau St. Jean is around 20 minutes.
We love wine country, and we think you will too! Take a look at our favorite restaurants, wineries, spas and attractions in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. We hope to help provide you with a well-rounded Napa/Sonoma experience through our wedding weekend activities, but also suggest that our guests take time to experience the area themselves. Should you decide to take advantage of the area's top restaurants, we suggest booking reservations early as things fill up quickly!
